Division 1 Team 1

Pleasure & Pain

Ideal forecast conditions were predicted for Bells Beach today with gale force winds and a likely swell of at least 8 to 9 metres providing for some spectacular competition.

Unlike Bells, conditions at Barwon Heads were a little less spectacular with balls rolling off greens, horizontal rain and hail and golf bags blowing over – some into bunkers.  Players were scrambling for coats, umbrellas, beanies and the occasional puffer jacket to combat the tough conditions where anyone who could handle the conditions, would win.

Our game this week was against the division underdogs in Anglesea who should never be underestimated in these conditions and with their longer handicaps.

First off was a fast moving and fast talking Marg Black at #5, always competitive geeing up her team mates, providing her usual comic relief and being a great support to her team mates.  With a lot of experience on the bag in President Sanders, Marg cruised to victory on the 15th hole but it was too late to double back and support #4 Julie Flintoff who played superb golf putting her way to victory with a 9/8 win with Chery Warrior taking the caddie money once again.

The handicapper will be catching up with you two next round!

Ably assisted by Helen Hill, next to finish was Vicki who jumped out to 5up after nine holes mostly due to her opponent not coping with the conditions well.  Being elevated to #2 with Jill Pring on holidays in Hawaii, she continued her unbeaten record closing out her match 5/4.

With a blackened and bruised toe from an earlier altercation with a pole at Kardinia Pool earlier this week,- apparently it was the pole’s fault !! , Wendy at #1 pushed through the pain, playing solid golf but had to stay on her feet until the 16 the hole for her first win of the season. Her frozen but dedicated caddie Norah was heard to comment “ About time “

With the match itself safe, we were keen to have a solid victory so it was up to Gill Morrision who found the conditions rough and unsettling finding it difficult to get her A grade game going early.  After being down most of the day, she rose to the occasion and rallied once again to win a few holes to scramble back finishing out with a birdie on the 19th hole to win.

Next week we host but sit very nicely on atop of the ladder.

Division 1 Team 2

Again congratulations to team 1 and Division 5 girls for another great win and both being on top of their respective ladders. Keep it rolling!!

Practise at Barwon Heads facilities is always a delight and then morning tea of scones certainly goes down well before we play.

Our Team 2 – another gutsy performance with Judy, Gael, Elaine, Lynne and Denise trying our hearts out- and again so close!!

Well done Lynne and Denise for the wins. Going down to Portarlington 3/2 was a great effort- particularly in wind, rain and yes hail!!!! Using a driver on the 17th  hole at Barwon Heads says it all and still was short!

Good to see us still all smiling and enjoying being part of a team. The hot pumpkin soup definitely warmed up our bodies when we finished.

The caddy winner goes to Anne – well done Lynne! Thanks again to our wonderful caddies – Elaine, Bron, Kaye, Anne, and Bernie for battling through the elements with us. You certainly worked hard and do hope you recovered from the cold.

Now we set our sights on Barwon Heads at Curlewis on Friday and consolidating our position in Division 1.

Division 5

It was with fear and trepidation that we took on our opponents Torquay (1) at The Sands on Friday.  The weather conditions were idyllic if you were competing in the Rip Curl Pro at Bell’s Beach but definitely not for a pennant match.  The only consolation was that it was going to be pretty awful for all concerned.

As Curlewis and Torquay (1) were positioned 1 and 2 respectively on the ladder it was going to be a crucial match between both clubs.

At one stage the heavens opened up and hail bombed us and the saying “dig deep” took on a whole new meaning.

Much to our relief we finished 2 each and our No. 1 trooper Claire finished the round triumphant on the 18th with many eager onlookers watching anxiously.  It was a great team effort with everyone giving 100%.

We look forward to visiting RACV Torquay next week and thank Anne and Louise for making up numbers for us against Lara.
