For the first time in many years the Curlewis Veterans Pennant team will contest the finals series.

Curlewis has been represented by Ian Chapman, Ray Drady, Leigh Edsall, John Fellows, Brian Shaw, Stan Stewart, Cliff Wenlock and David Yelland.

In a tightly contested season, we had wins against Barwon Valley, Ocean Grove, The Sands (Gold) and East Geelong. A loss to Clifton Springs in the middle of the season seemed likely to put an end to our chance of reaching the finals. However, a halved match against top side Portarlington put us back in contention.

In the final round of regular competition we had to beat East Geelong to reach the playoffs. With Ray Drady and Stan Stewart well in control of their matches we needed another player to get a win. Cliff Wenlock managed a half in his match with some fine putting under pressure. With the other two matches looking to go East’s way it looked likely we would fall just short. David Yelland staged a brilliant fight back from 4 down with 5 to play to get the need half on the 18th, making a putt of around 5 metres.

The team plays The Sands Black in the semi final on Monday at Barwon Valley. Full details of the season are on the GDVGA website at gdvga.com.au
