Division 1 Team 1

It was another perfect Friday weatherwise when our undefeated team played at Torquay. Facing a strong Barwon Heads team with big guns from Melbourne and experienced local players, this really was a must win contest.

First off and first to finish was Julie Flintoff. She got off to a strong start and was three up before her opponent responded with four straight wins to steal the lead. Jules’ game temporarily went missing at the resort and she soon found herself in the uncomfortable position of being two down on the 16th tee. But in true gutsy style, she went on to win the next three holes to win 1 up. The shot of the day was the birdie on the 17th.

Our next player Gill Morrison also got off to a great start winning the first two holes but her opponent also rallied to go one up until Gill levelled the score with a nice birdie. They continued to halve holes until they arrived at the 17th, which Gill claimed before she finished off her match with a great win on 18th to go 2 up. According to her caddy Pam, she putted brilliantly and did everything she told her because she is a great caddy!

Meanwhile our number 1 Wendy Tottenham and number 2 Jill Pring were having some difficult times in their matches. Jill’s opponent set the scene with a birdie on the opening hole. Not to be intimidated Jill responded with two birdies to go 1 up but unfortunately this was short lived when her opponent levelled with another birdie. At 1 down on the 11th tee, Jill was still feeling in the game. But two wayward drives and a missed putt were quickly taken advantage of by a big hitting consistent player who finished out with two more birdies to claim victory 5/3.

Wendy faced off against another long hitting player with a strong short game, who was steady throughout the match. Wendy mounted a brief comeback at five down to win two holes. When her putt lipped out on 15th, she found herself dormie 3. Never one to give up Wendy hit a solid drive on the16th but inexplicably that ball was never found. This was the fatal blow to her valiant effort to stay in the match with a final score of 4/2.

So with two matches each, it all came down to the match between our number 3 Vicki ‘Winx’ Carnie up against a local legend. Vicki was very focused and despite having the upper hand for most of the match, she let her opponent back into the match and unexpectedly found herself one down when she lost the 17th. Fighting back determinedly, she won the absolutely critical 18th hole to force a continuation down the 19th. This hole being halved saw the pair head down the 20th. With both sides and spectators desperate for the win and vital match points, the pressure was building. Our team was ecstatic when Vicki’s new blue wedge produced a beautiful pitch to the green followed by a perfect putt for birdie and victory. Big hugs and high fives all round!

Division 1 Team 2

What a beautiful sight to our eyes!! Firstly well done Team 1 and our Division 5 girls for 3 out of 3 wins.

We are absolutely thrilled to be in the winners circle with a 4/1 win against Anglesea at Torquay on Friday.

The coffee and tasty muffins were delicious before our matches and we needed them as we were delayed hitting off. Some of us were a bit slow off the mark but managed to get into gear and stay focused. A little like the Demons!!!

Torquay was in beautiful condition with the greens quick as usual- certainly adds to the challenge!

Judy Scarrott, Gael Charman, Elaine Cass, Lynne Perree and Denise Kelly again represented our Curlewis Club with pride. Denise won the caddies money much to Bernie’s delight!! Well done Denise!

Our caddies- Elaine Barker, Bron Burton, Jay Magee and Bernie Thomas were again there supporting us in our matches whether it be making us laugh or making us remember how to win a hole!

We have a week off and then do battle with Portarlington at Barwon Heads.

Well done Pennant teams and Happy Easter to you all.

A very proud Captain.
Judy Scarrott

Division 5

The tranquil shores of Apollo Bay set the scene for a perfect day’s golf for Division 5. The girls rose to the occasion and completed a 4/1 victory with one of the matches continuing to the 19th.

We added a number of scars to the trees on which the girls agreed was one of the narrowest driving courses they had played on.  The scenery was stunning from so many holes and the weather was perfect.

The temptation to scale the tree and retrieve her lodged ball defeated Pip and she reluctantly went back to the tee and played again.

Maybe our good form was due in no small part to the special hospitality provided by Cheryl Warrior.  It was a huge effort to drag ourselves away from the stunning outlook from her house.  Many thanks from all the girls Cheryl
